There’s a reason folks call Winona the Island City. Tucked between the bluffs and the mighty Mississippi, our river town knows how to do summer. July brings nationally known theatre and classical artists to downtown stages, weekly band concerts under the bandshell, a beloved Saturday farmers market, and a museum throwing itself a 20th-birthday party. Here’s your neighborly guide to the best of the month.
★ A Hometown Fourth of July
The Fourth lands on a Saturday this year, so kick off the holiday at the Winona Farmers Market (Levee Park, 7:30 a.m. to noon) for fresh flowers, sweet corn, and live local music down by the water. Good to know: Winona’s own fireworks actually light up Levee Park back in mid-June during Steamboat Days, so if you’re chasing rockets on the 4th itself, many locals make the short drive over to La Crosse, WI. However you celebrate, bring the lawn chairs and the bug spray.

Great River Shakespeare Festival
One of the Midwest’s premier theatre festivals settles into its new downtown home, The ARC, with rotating performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. Arrive early for the pre-show Green Show that tunes your ear to the verse.

Winona becomes a classical-music destination as world-renowned artists play intimate local venues. Bring a blanket to the historic Lake Park Bandshell, home to the band since 1924, for free Wednesday-evening concerts under the bluffs. Door prizes and special bits kick off around 7:30. July Wednesdays: the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th.

The summer’s biggest free night of music. As part of the Beethoven Festival, the Minnesota Orchestra plays a pops concert outdoors at Lake Park. Pack a picnic and your lawn chairs and settle in by the lake for a true Winona tradition.

A laid-back, family-friendly jam on the brewery’s spacious downtown patio (or inside the taproom if the weather turns). Players sit in, listeners relax, and donations support a local nonprofit, this month helping neighbors in need. Come early for a cold one and good music.
