Where the Bluffs Meet the Big River
Tucked between 500-foot limestone bluffs and the main channel of the Mississippi, Winona sits in the heart of the Driftless Area — the rugged corner of Minnesota the last glaciers never flattened. The townsite was platted in 1851 on Wapasha’s Prairie, a great sandbar in the river, and takes its name from the Dakota word Winúŋna, meaning “first-born daughter.” Locals have called it the Island City ever since.
The lumber and wheat boom made Gilded Age Winona one of the wealthiest small cities in America, and the fortunes it left behind built the Prairie School banks, grand churches, and glass studios that still define downtown. Today it is recognized as the Stained Glass Capital of the U.S. and the Kashubian-Polish capital of America — a genuine arts town with three colleges keeping the whole thing young.
